How to use Abaqus on Arrhenius

About the software

Abaqus is a commercial software package for finite element analysis. The Abaqus product suite consists of three core products: Abaqus/Standard, Abaqus/Explicit and Abaqus/CAE. Abaqus/Standard is a general-purpose solver using a traditional implicit integration scheme to solve finite element analyses. Abaqus/Explicit uses an explicit integration scheme to solve highly nonlinear transient dynamic and quasi-static analyses. Abaqus/CAE provides an integrated modelling (preprocessing) and visualisation (postprocessing) environment for the analysis products. Abaqus also provides a good collection of multiphysics capabilities, such as coupled acoustic-structural, piezoelectric, and structural-pore capabilities, making it attractive for production-level simulations where multiple fields need to be coupled. For more details, look at Dassault system's web page: https://www.3ds.com/products/simulia/abaqus/

How check the available versions on Arrhenius

You can run:

module avail abaqus

to see the available versions.

Abaqus env file

Before using Abaqus, you need to create an environment file called abaqus_v6.env containing information about your license server and other optional information. The file should be placed either on your home directory or your working directory where Abaqus is being launched. A sample env file can contain the following contents:

verbose=1
ask_delete=OFF
traceback_generator=OFF
cae_timeout=1
run_mode=BATCH
memory='90%'
mp_file_system=(DETECT,DETECT)
license_server_type=FLEXNET
abaquslm_license_file='port@hostname'
double_precision=BOTH
explicit_precision=DOUBLE_PRECISION

You need to replace port and hostname with your own license server information. If your license server is DSLS instead of FlexNet (ask your license administrator about that), you need to set your license server as follows in the env file:

LICENSE_SERVER_TYPE=DSLS
dsls_license_config='~/DSLicSrv.txt'
where DSLicSrv.txt is a file you create on your home directory and add the license server information there in the following format hostname:port.

How to use Abaqus CAE

Please note that you can use Abaqus CAE for pre and post-processing and for running simulations, you need to use the batch job submission as described in the next section.

You can launch Abaqus CAE with the following command:

srun -A <allocation> --mem 2G -p cpu -t 1:00:00 --x11 abaqus cae

If you need more memory, you can request more memory with the --mem flag.

Submitting an Abaqus job on Arrhenius CPU partition

The following represents a sample job script for running Abaqus on 32 CPU cores:

#!/bin/bash
#SBATCH -J abaqus
#SBATCH -A <allocation>
#SBATCH -t 01:00:00
#SBATCH -p cpu
#SBATCH -e error_file.e%J
#SBATCH -o output_file.o%J
#SBATCH -c 32

module load Abaqus/2025-bdist

inputFile=c1.inp

abaqus job=$inputFile cpus=32 mp_mode=threads interactive
